Completed Games – Batman Arkham Asylum

Batman_Arkham_Asylum box cover

Who would have though a licensed superhero game would turn out to be one of the best single player games of 2009?

Batman Arkham Asylum is easily one of the best video games based on a comic book character. It completes the critical dominance of Batman in media along with the two Christopher Nolan movies (Batman Begins and The Dark Knight) and Alan Moore’s graphic novel classic The Dark Knight Returns.

It starts of with Batman taking The Joker back to Arkham Asylum, the name for a group of facilities on Arkham Island which holds a penitentiary, intensive treatment, and a medical facility along with Arhkam Mansion and a botanical gardens. Joker has planned to take down Batman in an environment filled with his fellow villains (Bane, Croc, Harley Quinn, Poison Ivy) and imprisoned criminals.

It is an action adventure game that focuses on hand to hand combat, stealth and Batman’s array of gadgets. The fighting system is combo based and fluid reminiscent of Assassins Creed in its simplicity and counter attacks. The visual style is cinematic and dark but retaining much of its comic book heritage borrowing elements from other games such as Bioshock and Metroid series in terms of presentation, progression and psychological manipulation sections.

Finished in around 20 hours with 100% story and collectible completion. Looking forward to playing it again on hard and completing the challenge rooms.

Favourites – Atmosphere, characters and the fighting system.
